A PhD is an academic or professional degree that qualifies you to become an academic in your chosen field or to work in a specialized position in your field. This postgraduate degree lasts approximately 3 to 7 years, although some universities give you the possibility to finish it in 10 years depending on whether you have difficulties with defining your research and/or carrying it out.
The PhD programs start at the end of August or in the first days of September and contemplates four distinctive stages that mix study and research:
Courses: At the beginning of the program you will have to take several subjects that increase your knowledge of the chosen area, as well as its history and evolution in different research.
Research core: At this stage you will take courses related to special research, analysis and writing skills, thus preparing you for the final dissertation.
Comprehensive exam: The comprehensive exam is an important stage in the PhD program that tests your knowledge of all the key concepts you have learned up to that point. You only have two chances to take it and if you do not pass the university will ask you to withdraw from the program.
Dissertation: You will work with a dissertation committee to identify a topic to work on, which you will have to research, analyze and write about in depth before defending your research to the committee.

Todos los años Fulbright abre convocatorias para postular a becas de magíster y doctorado. Poseen distintas opciones que debes revisar para encontrar aquella beca que mejor se adapte a ti y que también sea acorde al candidato que ellos están buscando.
Becas Chile abre las postulaciones todos los años para acceder a beneficios financieros, la convocatoria comienza en abril y termina en mayo. Al momento de enviar tu postulación a Becas Chile, ya debes estar aceptado/a en alguna universidad que cumpla con los criterios de Becas Chile.
Esto dependerá de tus intereses personales y también de la línea de investigación que tengan las distintas casas de estudios. Existen más de 100 universidades que imparten el programa de doctorados o PhD en Estados Unidos, por lo que es importante que revises qué universidades se destacan en tu área de estudio.
Esto puede ser mediante papers recientes o libros que hayan tenido un alto impacto en tu área de interés, puedes buscar perfiles de profesionales en internet que tengan algún puesto de trabajo el cual te gustaría obtener en un futuro cercano. Existen charlas asociadas a los laboratorios de las distintas universidades que entregan información sobre sus intereses y las investigaciones que se están llevando a cabo.
Un dato importante es que escribas a quién podría ser tu posible profesor guía antes de postular. No tengas miedo en hacerlo, ya que suelen responder las inquietudes de posibles estudiantes y además te coloca en el radar de la universidad. Además, puede ocurrir que ese año, en determinada casa de estudio, no se encuentren aceptando alumnos para el programa de doctorado. Aunque seas un excelente candidato y tengas una excelente postulación, no quedarás y habrás gastado tiempo y dinero.
