Chile saw a slight overall decline of –0.7% in the number of students enrolled in U.S. higher-education institutions during the 2024–25 academic year.
Despite this minor decline, Chile remains a stable and strategically important sending country in South America, continuing to show solid participation in degree programs and post-study work opportunities through OPT.
The requirements to apply to any local HEI are quantitative; the weighted score will determine the student’s acceptance into an institution’s major.
The weighted score is the sum of the percentages of the three factors, according to each university’s criteria for its different undergraduate programs: NEM (GPA) + PAES (Standardized
Test) + Ranking Score.

The high school graduation grade is obtained by averaging the grade point averages of each course and approximating this result to the second decimal place.


In Chile, 88% of students complete secondary education, above the EU average (86%) and the OECD (85%), and much higher than other countries in the region.
In 2026, enrollment in higher education reached the highest levels in its history.
