High School and Higher education institutions

The Chilean education system faces challenges, including the quality gap between public and private institutions and the need to adapt programs for a changing labor market.

Here we need to describe the landscape of high schools in Chile, how students learn, and what they do and don’t do in relation to the U.S. high school experience and college search.

Chile is the longest country in the world, extending 2,700 miles (4,345.23 km), which is roughly the same distance as from California to New York.

The World Bank classifies Chile as a high-income country with a stable political environment.

Chile’s higher education application process

The requirements to apply to any local HEI are quantitative; the weighted score will determine the student’s acceptance into an institution’s major.

The weighted score is the sum of the percentages of the three factors, according to each university’s criteria for its different undergraduate programs: NEM (GPA) + PAES (Standardized
Test) + Ranking Score.

PAES (STANDARDIZED TEST)

PAES (STANDARDIZED TEST)

The PAES has two types of tests: compulsory ones, Reading Competence and Mathematical Competence M1, and elective ones, Science, History and Social Sciences, and Mathematical Competence 2 M2.

Chile’s higher education institutions

In Chile, 88% of students complete secondary education, above the EU average (86%) and the OECD (85%), and much higher than other countries in the region.

In 2023, enrollment in higher education reached the highest levels in its history.

The Total Enrollment in Chile in 2023 is 1,341,439 students, considering undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate
